CARE FOR YOUR BRUSHES

Hi Friends,

Some days ago, I visited a group of MUAs (Makeup artists) and noticed their non-challant attitude towards caring for their tools. Right there and then, I decided to do this post.

Bacteria and oils which cause breakouts, acne and other skin problems can easily travel from one person to another through your makeup brushes. If your tools get contaminated, you can run the risk of infecting everyone you work on in the future. The best technique is to properly care for your tools in order to eliminate the possibility of cross contamination.

To clean your brushes, take a little brush cleaner or very gentle soap in your palm, wet the brush and swirl the bristles around your palm until they are covered in soap. (In the absence of a brush cleaner, I use baby shampoo with warm water, but a real brush cleaner is a must because it contains anti bacterial and other germ killing ingredients). Then, rinse very well until the soap is completely gone. Gently squeeze out excess water with a clean towel, reshape the bristles, and let it dry by laying your brushes flat.

How often should you clean?

Depends on the frequency of use, but I wash mine after every use. Regular cleaning will keep your brushes in better working condition, remove old makeup, dirt, dead skin cells, bacteria and oil. Brushes used with cream or liquids such as foundation, concealer, lip-gloss should be washed immediately after use, while your powder, blush and eye-shadow brushes can be washed weekly.

Don’t immerse all your brushes in water all at once as this soften the glue holding the bristles at the base and even the most expensive brushes will come apart.

Don’t blow dry or use direct sunlight to dry your brushes as this will ruin the bristles in the brush.

Don’t dry your brushes standing up as water can go down into the handle and destroy the glue holding the bristles.

Remember, makeup brushes are an investment, proper cleaning and a great care will make your brush set last you several years.

Till my next post, stay beautiful.
